The Nebraska Naturalists & Scientists project received support through an anonymous donation to the Archives & Special Collections in 2013. The goal is to provide greater access to primary source documents and publications that illustrate the unique resources that general scholarship by early faculty and others associated with the University of Nebraska. These resources may provide general enjoyment as well as for support of education and new research on natural sciences and environmental history.

The project includes transcription of selected materials created by individuals who focused their interests and research on Nebraska, the Nebraska Sandhills and Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska. The transcription encoding is done through the use of the Text Encoding Initative (TEI) P5 Guidelines, a standard used in digital humanities work.

The Naturalists & Scientists site is based on the an earlier project to place Frank H. Shoemaker's narratives, records, and selected photographs online initiated with a research grant from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries. Mary Ellen Ducey, Elaine Nowick, and Rebecca Bernthal began the project by scanning photographic plates and negatives from Shoemaker's collection of glass plate negatives, film negatives, prints, and documents. Nowick and Bernthal recieved support from the Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

A great deal of thanks goes to many individuals who assisted with various aspects of this project. Josh Caster, Benjamin Schmitz, Laura Weakly, Karin Dalziel, Keith Nickum, and Jared Roehrich were involved in scanning, creating transcriptions, and providing assistance on web site production. In relation to the work on Frank Shoemaker, thanks to Mary Ellen Ducey's brother Jim Ducey, whose early work provided access to Shoemaker's historic bird records.

The records presented on this website are housed in the Archives & Special Collections, University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries. This website is provided through the assistance of Etext , also a part of the University Libraries.
